First week back... it was hard, I was sore, swollen and at times pretty grumpy.
However it was also amazing, mind-blowing, heart warming and so much fun!
We only have five and a half weeks left- it's tricky... I need time to recover but I don't want to miss anything! I had Wednesday off this week, but I don't think it was quite enough. Next week I think I'll work Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Hopefully that will keep me on track recovery wise and by having day on day off I'll be feeling much better on the days that I am at school.
One way to minimise my stress at school is to start a new time consuming, but creative and fun art project.
Step one... instead of using store bought coloured paper the kids had to use their art skills to make their own, blending, shading, different depths, hues, tones etc etc.
Here are some of the papers we've created (yes they used their hands at times)....The next step will come soon ;)
When I returned to school on Monday I had over 200 new emails waiting for me.
I'd just start reading a book a few days before returning and in that book the author talked about things that are a total waste of our time... meetings and emails being top of the list.
I HATE meetings! I think 99% of meetings are unnecessary... meetings for the sake of meetings.
Occasionally something of value comes out of them... as in once in a blue moon.
Anyway back to emails.
I have challenged myself to only check emails twice a day this week.. Even on the first day back I stuck to this rule. I blocked out some time at lunch time and went for it.
Guess what- out of 238 emails only 5- (THAT'S RIGHT 5!!) even required a response!!!
Maybe another 3 or 4 had information that was actually semi-important!
Lesson learnt- hypothesis proved correct. The majority of emails are also a waste of time.
From next week on I'll be checking it once a day. Who knows, maybe the following week I'll drop it to ever second day!
Freaky teacher moment this week... We did a place value test (quite a tricky, advanced place value for 10-11 year olds) and boy it was an eye opener... As soon as a decimal point appears in a number they seem to lose all logical reasoning! I know that working with parts of a whole is quite a difficult, abstract concept for kids to grasp but I was surprised at just how little they were able to cross over what they can do with whole numbers into working with decimals.
So we spent the week finding how many tenths were in a number, how many hundredths were in a number and rounding rounding rounding! To 1dp, 2dp, 3dp... and I think we'll need to do more this coming week. That's ok though- we're all going to feel so much better when they've really got it!
Then.... we're back to algebra for the last few weeks of the year!
5. Helpful Cat
This is Nala helping her dad... she does this every morning for a couple of hours and he loves her too much to move her! At times he ends up completely losing the function in his left hand because he's using it to support her head so her weight doesn't push all the keys on the left side of the keyboard!
That's all from me, I'm going back to sleep I think! Happy Saturday everybody!
I'm now three weeks post-op and every day I am feeling better and better- so that's great, however on the other hand it still seems like progress is soooooo slow! I can now walk without looking like I'm 100 years old however I can't walk at my normal (fast) speed yet. I can't lie on my tummy, I can't exercise (apart from slow walking) I can't jump, do handstands, or even laugh too much. So that's frustrating.
However- I must remind myself that I literally was cut open and therefore I should be patient- and I am being very patient 99% of the time!
Here's a progress pic- there's still a big band of swelling above the stitches. That will take at least a few more weeks to go down (another reminder to myself I have a lot of stitches inside under my skin too- it all needs time to heal, not just what I can see!
I've been making sure I get out for walks to build up my stamina for school on Monday- luckily I've got a great place to do it!
I've also managed a few outings with friends this week!
2. School on Monday
So I'm going back on Monday
I wasn't really looking forward to it until I started getting a whole heap of cards and messages from my class.
Now I miss them and can't wait to go back!
My favourite part "I say to every teacher they are the best but you truly are"
Hahahaha! Out of the mouth of babes!
Sorry they're sideways I don't have the patience to switch them!
I've had lots of time to read
Gone Girl was recommended to me
It was good- until the end. I didn't like the end.
Not because it was a bad ending as such- but because what happened was NOT what I wanted to happen!
And.... Divergent- finished in less than 24 hours and I'm straight onto Insurgent.
I love them!
If you're a Hunger Games fan you'll love these.
Similar but different :)
4. Advice Please
I've been thinking about doing some more study.
Educational psychology- I already do a lot of things in my classroom in order to help my kids recognise the importance of how they "speak to themselves" in their own mind, and how to over come failures, set goals etc etc etc. I think constantly training and extending the brain and how you think is so important for success.
I've been asked at school to do a post-graduate diploma in leadership. I'm not really interested- I've looked at the course and it's all policy and politics etc etc.
Not what I'm passionate about at all.
That's what lead me to look into what I actually am passionate about.
I'd be doing it part time while still working full time- no problem. But this means the one year diploma would take two years- also not really a problem.
It is also the first half of a Masters degree in Educational Psychology should I decide to go even further.
So that's all great
I realised last night that after all that work it wouldn't actually make any difference to what I get paid- so is it worth it?
Our pay scale in New Zealand is based on the qualifications we attained prior to and while becoming a teacher- the pay scale I'm on is equal to that of someone with a Masters degree because of my previous degrees etc.
So- even if I did the two years to get the diploma, and even kept going and achieved my Masters in it it wouldn't change how much I get paid.
Therefore is all that time and effort worth it?
On the flip side- it would make me a specialist in the area which I assume means in time I could go into more of a consultant type role- does that make it worth it?
I don't know- help! What do you think? Is it worth all the extra time, money and stress?!
I have nothing else to write because I want to get showered (it's Saturday morning in NZ) and back to my book... plus I have an episode of Scandal waiting for me! (Have to make the most of my last two days before school starts haha)

I'm now two weeks post op and feeling SO much better than I was even two days ago.
The doctor calls this "turning the first corner"
I'm able to walk without looking like I'm 105 years old, I have come off the hard pain killers and can get through a day with just paracetamol and voltaren and all the dressings have come off.
Now it's just a waiting game for the swelling to go down and the pain to fully disappear. I'm hoping two more weeks... but even if it's four more weeks until it's totally gone I feel so much better now I'm "around this corner" that four weeks is ok too :)
This was yesterday- the weather was warm enough to wear "loose fitting" clothes that didn't look like pjs! Woohoo... I was off to watch my husband with the sharks (see number 2)
As part of his PhD graduation gift I bought my hubby a shark dive and organised one of his good friends to do it with him (cause like hell I was going to!)
They did it yesterday and loved it. Apparently the glass dome we were viewing from makes everything in the water appear 1/3 smaller than it really is- this guy must have been massive!
There were a few other cool creatures there too
3. Getting Creative
As I was in my usual position flat on my back, skimming the internet I was inspired by all of your fun halloween resources to do some doodles (gotta pass the time somehow when you can't move around). I though some of them were pretty cute so I packaged them up and put them up as a freebie on TpT. They're simple but I think the silhouettes especially are pretty cool :)
Check them out by clicking on the picture
Hubby decided he needed a video camera for all his coaching- fair call.
Then he decided maybe a fancy new camera that would also take amazing videos was a better way to go
So... we got a fancy new camera yesterday.
I think he's going to have an amazing time teaching himself how to do lots of fancy stuff with it. Once he's learnt he can show me.
He said yesterday after I only played with it for about two minutes "cool technology doesn't really phase you does it- don't you want to play more"
Me: "No thanks- you can just show me how to use it once you've figured it out"
haha my mind isn't wired to be fascinated by cool technology.
I have a feeling we're going to end up with even more photos of Nala than we already have...
And on that note-
5. My cat is crazy.
She really really loves rockmelon (cantelope)
As in she will rip my hand off if I don't feed it to her and as soon as she hears/smells ?!? me cutting it she starts scream-meowing at me!
That's all from me
I'm off to watch the latest scandal episode! YAHOO!!!!
Fitness has always been a part of my life- I even have an honours degree in Exercise Physiology so it's definitely something I'm passionate about.
However I don't love all forms of exercise. The only cardio I love is kick boxing. Some aerobics classes are ok but not great enough that I can't wait to get to them (like I am with kick boxing).
However most of the time I don't even do cardio- just weights. HEAVY weights... So the heart rate is still highly elevated, it's an all over full body work out. Plus resistance training is so good for you!
So here's my truth.
So that's it- the most important thing is to actually find something you like NO MATTER WHAT IT IS because it is so so hard to give your time to something you don't enjoy.
Go over and share your truth!
What a great way to get to know each other better!
